Tamworth Wireless – Frequently Asked Questions

Tamworth Wireless is a Non-Profit Rural Wireless Cooperative, providing Internet Access in and around Tamworth, New Hampshire, via a Fixed Wireless Broadband network.

1. How does it work?
Fixed Wireless Broadband is a system that uses radio gear to transmit data. The basic technology is over 50 years old, but over the last several years it has been refined for high-bandwidth data communications applications. “Fixed” means a mounted antenna is required. “Wireless” means what it implies – no wires – the connection between the subscriber and provider’s network occurs through the air. We have Access Points on hilltops, broadcasting data. You need a receiver at your location to receive the data, and get access to the Internet.

2. What kind of speed can I expect?
As of December, 2010, we are able to deliver Download speeds between 1.75 & 2 Mbps, and upload speeds up to .75 Mbps to our subscribers.  We also offer a budget plan for approximately half of that speed. The system itself is capable of delivering much more, and we are working towards increasing the available bandwidth every day. We won’t install any equipment until we have tested at your location and determined that we can deliver the speeds promised.

3. How much does it cost?
To become a subscriber to Tamworth Wireless, you’ll need to purchase an Internet Radio to receive the signal and have it installed. The usual cost of the equipment and installation is about $400, and it varies depending on what it takes to get the best signal. This cost can be spread out over your first year of service. The monthly charge for our standard service is $45, and the budget plan is $22.50 per month, at half the speed. If you spread the equipment and installation cost over the first year, it would cost about $78 per month for the “standard” service, about $60 for the “budget” level. If after a week you decide that the service won’t work for you, we’ll come back and get the equipment, and return your money.

4. Can I get an “@tamwireless.net” e-mail address?
Yes, you can! If you’d like to buck the almost universal trend and stand out from the “cloud”, we can provide you with an @ tamwireless.net  address, and we’re working on setting up a “webmail” interface.

5. What about health concerns related to microwave radiation?
The technology we’re using emits an electromagnetic field equivalent to one old-fashioned “Christmas Tree” light bulb, far less than a cell phone tower, and about 1200 times less than a microwave oven. The World Health Organization has addressed public concerns over the health effects of fixed Wi-Fi, and has some excellent information on there website here. From that page: “Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.”
